This hospital was established before independence period and was then known as Police Hospital. Initially it provided medical facilities to Delhi Police personnel only and was also carrying out all Medico legal work and Postmortems of the whole city of Delhi. However in 1984 it was renamed as Civil Hospital and in 1994 the foundation stone was laid for the first Phase of its expansion, which was completed on 23rd August 1996 with 40 beds. The name was again changed to Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital. In July 2000 the second phase was completed with facilities for Operation and another 60 beds were added.
